Vitamin D; Celiac and Reproductive Issues

December 26th: Vitamin D: you can't turn around in a health food store or even a drugstore without bumping into a bottle; and, for those of us in the northern climes, we're constantly admonishing each other to "get outside and get your Vitamin D!" Here's a great discussion on Vitamin D requirements, inspired by the recent recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to bump up the requirements for children and adults under age 70 to 600 I.U. (from a previous 400 I.U.). From "The Huffington Post", by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

January 3rd:
You may have tasted organic or grass-fed beef, or even bison or buffalo. but, have you thought about more of the issues that revolve around cattle grazing and sustainable agriculture, such as holistic high-density grazing, improving topsoil structure and aeration? Maybe not the stuff of prime-time entertainment, but two groups -- Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Maryland Grazers Network - are sponsoring seminars on these topics as part of the 2011 Future Harvest-CASA Annual Conference, to be held January 14-15th at Pearlstone Center and Kayam Farm, Reisterstown, Maryland; "We Are What We EAt: Community Health Through Sustainable Farming."

An excellent tutorial, re social media and getting organized for the New Year.

January 14th: Day before yesterday I listened to a webinar given by Knowlegewebb.com, geared toward photographers in the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association). Knowledgewebb agreed that I could provide a link to the notes on this site. The NPPA is an excellent organization! (Photograph to left of this text unrelated, it's licensed from Creative Commons.) International GF restaurants, bison meat, World Cheese Award Winner: Cornish Blue

December 30th: Which restaurants serving gluten free food are your favorites, worldwide? I'd love to know. Please tell me in a blog comment and I'll post them in the "friendly dining options" section. Thanks!
December 29th: Have you had your bison meat today? In our household, we've been buying it lately, I've gotta say. And this A.P. article I saw on Huff Post confirms: consumers are demanding more and more bison meat, and ranchers are having trouble keeping up with demand. One reason? Bison heifers can be more valuable for breeding. More in this newsy piece by Steve Karnowski.

December 29th: I love blue cheese (or bleu cheese, never sure which is the most shi-shi descriptor), don't you? Of course, some of it isn't gluten free -- I deal with this elsewhere on this site -- always check with the cheese maker. But I digress. Cornish Blue cheese bested over 2,000 others to win top place at the World Cheese Awards, according to "News Cornwall." I've been to a cheese festival; they are a ton of fun. Anyone been to the World Cheese Awards?

December 21st: Organic: always better? Yet another entrant into the ongoing debate, yet this USA article from Twitterer "TheAtlanticFOOD" seems to affirm that organic is, indeed, better: at least if one wants less pesticide residue in one's body. But it affirms what I've heard before - there's not a huge difference between organic/non-organic bananas, for instance. An interesting read:

December 18th: Today is a very special day: it's my friend Licia's birthday! Please send good thoughts.
December 18th: This article in the November, 2010 "Runner's World" re the GF diet was discovered by your one and only, while I was working out a few minutes ago. Yeah, print magazines! It restates what I and other gluten free epicureanistas have known all along: the GF diet can be healthier mainly because it requires one to go back to the basics -- beans, nuts, fruits and veggies, meat cooked without a lot of additives. But it's not necessarily healthier, per se. See my page, "Gluten Free for a Healthy Weight?" It also affirms that some GF grains -- quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat -- to name a few, are, indeed, chock full of nutrients, fiber, etc. Please see my blog post (December 10, 2010) about the healthier GF grains: "Amaranth, buckwheat, and quinoa: gluten free grains at the the top of the heap!"
